Who We Are?

Introduction

Maiti India is a non-governmental organization established on 2008 to fight trafficking of human and other forms of exploitation in children and women. In the year, 2007, team of founders visited the Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi and Nepal consulates in other cities of India with an objective to learn about the genuine scenario of Nepalese women and children being entrapped in various forms of exploitation in these cities. The visit presented the brief yet horrifying picture of women and children suffering in the Indian Prisons who were arrested on the charges varying from passport tampering, passport forgery which was in actual done by the agents and also the women and children being abandoned by the employers and brothel owners. This resulted the origination of the idea to establish a organization Maiti India so as to protect innocent women and children lured by the agents and pushed into the exploitative situations in the prisons.
Since its time of establishment, Maiti India has been collaborating and cooperating strongly with the Indian Government, local NGOs Organizations and Nepal government to facilitate rescue and repatriation from Delhi and some adjoining cities of India, which is one of the most important programmes of Maiti India.

Over the past decade, trafficking in human beings has reached epidemic proportions. Trafficking in human beings is a crime in which victims are moved from poor environments to more affluent ones, with the profits flowing in the opposite direction, a pattern often repeated at the domestic, regional, and global levels.

This modern form of slavery primarily affects women and children, but for many it happens to “some one else’s child.” The destruction caused to the lives of individuals and families by trafficking in person is not only a national problem; it is also a global problem. This heinous crime, which transports people from around the world for purposes of domestic servitude, unlawful industrial and agricultural work, illegal adoption, forced begging, and the sex industry, denies their victims’ dignity, often subjecting them to torture and abuse.
